Physiotherapy in Gurgaon
What is Physiotherapy?
Physiotherapy is a type of treatment that helps restore your body movements that might have been hindered due to injury, illness, disability, or even old age. This treatment improves the mobility and functioning of your bones, muscles, joints, and ligaments.
There are numerous issues that physiotherapy can help cure. There is a common assumption that physiotherapy is sought only after an injury, surgery, or when the mobility or functioning of any part of your body is completely hindered. This isn’t true. You could include physiotherapy in your routine as you grow older, or when you encounter body pain often.
Types of physiotherapy:
There are two major types of physiotherapy:
Passive physiotherapy:
Here the treatment method does not require any effort from the patient. Such as massage therapy, applying ice packs, heat therapy, electrotherapy, ultrasound to name a few. These methods usually aim to reduce swelling and pain.
Active physiotherapy:
This treatment involves effort from the patients as well. They might be required to move their body to perform exercises and stretches. This method aims to improve mobility, strength, and posture.
Physiotherapy helps treat issues like:
Frequent back, neck, or other pains
Muscle cramps and spasms
Stiffness or lack of flexibility
Lack of mobility
Post-surgery pain
Injury
Body imbalance
Arthritis
As we age our bones, muscles, and joints weaken since they’ve been used and are under pressure for a long time. So, it is natural to undergo pain especially after working or putting strain on your body. This can be overcome by going to regular physiotherapy sessions that would help strengthen your bones and muscles, improve flexibility by removing stiffness, and relieve pain. Common complaints faced by the elderly include neck, back, shoulder pain, and arthritis.
Physiotherapy exercises for patients with neck pain:
Head and Shoulder rolls
Rest your arms with your palms parallel to your thighs. Now roll your shoulders forward and backward 5 times each. Do three sets of each within intervals. Then, turn your head left to right and back to left 10 times. Later, rotate it clockwise 3 times and anti-clockwise 3 times. Do ensure that you do the head rotation slowly as it might cause dizziness in some.
Neck stretch
You can do this while standing or even during the middle of your work just by sitting on your desk. Stretch your left hand such that it is parallel to the ground and place your right hand over your head. Now lean your head towards your right thus stretching your neck for 3 seconds. Now repeat the same on the other side. Do this 5 times each. Ensure that you sit or stand straight and maintain proper posture while doing this exercise.
You should also note that neck pain could be a result of many ailments that affect your body differently. Hence, it is always advisable to consult your doctor if you suffer from prolonged, recurring, or unbearable neck pain.
Physiotherapy exercises for patients with shoulder pain:
Marching stretches
Stretch your right hand upward and your left hand downward while simultaneously inhaling such that your chest rises forward. Hold your breath for a second while in this position. Then exchange hands while exhaling and bringing your chest inwards. Repeat this combination 5 times.
Downward dog pose
Begin in the push-up position then push your back and buttocks backward such that your head is in between both your hands. Stay in this position for 10 seconds. Relax then repeat the exercise 3 times. This is also a commonly known yoga pose known as the ‘mountain pose’.
Physiotherapy exercises for patients with back pain:
Lower back rotational stretches
Lie flat on the floor with both arms stretched on either side while resting on the ground. Fold your knees inwards such that both your feet lie flat on the ground. Now bend your knees to one side, resting on the ground and stay in the position for 2 seconds. Then, bend them to the other side and rest for 2 seconds. Do this combination 10 times.
You could do a similar exercise as this even while being seated. Sit straight such that your feet are resting on the floor. Lock both your palms to the back of your head while stretching your folded hands outward. Now do a similar rotational movement with your hips. Turn to your left and rest for 2 seconds then turn to your right and rest for 2 seconds. Repeat this combination 10 times.
Doggy stretches:
Kneel down then bend forward such that your palms rest on the floor. Adjust your posture so that your back is parallel to the floor and your knees are hip-width apart. Now push your stomach downward while stretching your buttock outward. Look up with your head while doing so. Then return to the initial position. Repeat this 10 times then relax. Do 3 sets of this exercise with small intervals.
What is Arthritis?
Arthritis is a condition when one or more of your joints swell and become tender. This causes stiffness and pain in your joints. Arthritis can get severe with age.
There are two types of arthritis:
